South African singer Luka 120 recently released a single, produced by DJ Mapitlo, called God Heal Africa. The single is part of a Christian collection called God’s Son, ahead of another new EP titled Strong Black Man Is King.

“Influence” is a loaded, often misunderstood concept. An artist may sound similar to another but have no knowledge of them, or be a super-fan of someone whose output is completely different to their own. Who or what was the artist, album, song, era or scene that initially mapped out the road to you becoming a musician?

I think R Kelly and Michael Jackson  really shaped and helped build the beginning of my music career, particularly the TP-2.com album by R Kelly.

Has that changed over the years? If so, how and why, and what are you currently exploring?

Currently I am in an album mood and an EP mood ,trying to reach Gold status with my album Drunk In Monaco, which currently has more than 12 000 streams on Spotify. I also did a song called Corona with a couple of international musicians, which was produced by Man P and Jordan Lax, and which tried to educate people about the pandemic.

In production and arrangement terms, what are facets of your music and the music you love most by others that you feel are crucially important in terms of creating the mood you’re after or supporting the message of your song?

I think it’s the messages. I do mostly love songs, talking about break-ups and make-ups. And my song God Heal Africa is hip hop gospel!

Which aspects of your music do you prioritise? For you, would you rather have that your lyrics, your melodies, or your vocals or instrumental work are the are the most memorable parts of your songs?

Lyrics and the sound of instruments are most important in my music. I try and focus as much as possible on the craft of making the music.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_widget_sidebar sidebar_id=”default_sidebar”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
