The Farm Stall at Halls, N4 Halls Gateway, Mbombela.
Carte: Separate food and drinks menus, with plenty of choice – reflecting a pleasing combination of imagination and a lack of pretence – on both.
Smart: A glass-enclosed tea-room and a larger space with a wonderful fireplace and dozens of biscuit, tea and coffee tins nailed to the ceiling are both welcoming inside spaces. Outside, diners at picnic-style tables are surrounded by verdant foliage in a nursery.
Heart: Friendly, smiling staff with their names on personalised T-shirts are as engaging as they are helpful.
Flavour: This is farming country. They are not shy with portion sizes. And everything bursts with flavour. Dishes are not designed to win plating awards or use ingredients non-foodies will have to look up online, but you find yourself gobsmacked at how much there is on the plate when it arrives and how quickly it vanishes once you tuck in. Personal favourites – the chicken schnitzel with cheese sauce (the allegedly “smaller” option) and the pulled pork and pineapple omelette.
Savour: Mouth-watering tastes, value for money and charm in terms of both your surroundings and your hosts.
